'DIANA' is finished.

Clocking in at 308 pages, Diana is finished. I started work on this book exactly two years ago, and have spent the last 13 months inking, lettering, and painting the pages full-time, 6-7 days a week. (I also had to completely re-pencil 200 pages of the book as I went, due to a defective batch of Strathmore paper!) These characters are so alive to me, and it’s bittersweet to know that this wraps up the whole saga. Release dates, ordering info, etc. will be available in the coming months.

This will also be my final solo fiction graphic novel for quite a while. A fresh start will take patience and openness for new ideas to brew. My fiction is my lifeblood, but it’s increasingly difficult to make these books in a way that’s even partially sustaining— so if my work is meaningful to you, please buy my books, spread the word about them, and have your local library order copies. Thank you!

Diana is both a stand-alone character-centered novel and a prequel to my 2024 book Fall Through, for which I’ve been nominated for an Eisner Award for Best Lettering. 2025 Eisner Award nominee!

I’m honored to find I’m a nominee for the 2025 Eisner Awards in the “Best Lettering” category, covering my work in both Fall Through and Lies My Teacher Told Me!

I love lettering my comics, and there’s a special thrill in it— lettering really is the underappreciated step in the process which makes much of the comics magic happen. With each book, I find my hand-lettering becomes increasingly interwoven with the artwork itself. I was nominated for Best Lettering one prior time, in 2009 for my debut graphic novel Swallow Me Whole. Being recognized by a win in this category would be incredibly meaningful to me.

If you’re eligible to vote in the Eisner Awards, voting is open from now until June 5th— you’ll likely have a link in your inbox. Thank you so much for your consideration as you vote! Winners will be announced on July 25th at San Diego Comic Con.

There are lots of fantastic nominees this year, across the comics spectrum, but I would like to endorse one in particular: my good friend and brilliant comics scholar Caitlin McGurk is nominated for “Best Comics-Related Book” for her fantastic debut work, Tell Me a Story Where the Bad Girl Wins: The Life and Art of Barbara Shermund, which is very deserving of your vote. I sincerely hope that people are rightly alarmed, and that you’re already taking steps to find your people and interconnected networks to help look out for each other— as well as ways in which you, as an individual, will directly participate to protect each other and what remains of democracy.

Over these past few days, I’ve regularly had conversations with people who have become parents in the past five years or so, asking advice about how to explain this election, fascism, democracy, protest, consumer culture, iconography, and more to a new generation of young people. As I’ve been gathering my notes, it’s apparent that my 2021 book Save It For Later is evergreen in the worst of ways.

I strongly encourage you to read Save It For Later (sure, buy one, or just check it out from the library for free) and reflect upon how these observations of intergenerational reckoning throughout the 2010s increasingly apply today. The time has arrived for this book too late, but that’s why it’s crucial to put it at the top of my pile of work.

Save It For Later received starred reviews at both Publishers Weekly and Booklist, was nominated for Eisner, Ringo, and Harvey Awards (as well as an Ignatz Award nomination for its central chapter, “About Face”), and appeared on “Best of 2021” lists through the American Library Association, Publishers Weekly, NPR, CBR, and Geekcast Radio.

New "About Face" interview for Gear Patrol

I was honored to speak with Evan Malachosky for this Gear Patrol piece about the infiltration of “tactical” paramilitary aesthetic into every corner of our consumer lives, and how that relates to our social and political reality— it’s a thorough and nuanced look into the history of many outdoor and tactical equipment companies as well as their marketing considerations, and I encourage everyone to read it! I learned a lot along the way.

It remains a profound honor that my comics essay “About Face” has continued to serve such a crucial role in our larger cultural discussion about the crisis of mainstreamed fascism— and how our lives as consumers play into this nightmare. “About Face” is the central chapter of my essay/memoir hybrid Save It For Later, which was an Eisner Awards nominee for Best Graphic Memoir this year. "RUN" is an Eisner Award winner!

We’re all deeply honored for our work on Run to have received this year’s Eisner Award for Best Graphic Memoir— a lot of love and dedication went into helping take John Lewis’ final living work across the finish line. Thanks to everyone who voted for either Run or Save It For Later in the Eisners this year, who came out to a panel, who helped John-Miles Lewis feel at home in the comics community, who attended a Save It For Later, Run, or Two Dead signing, and thanks to everyone at San Diego Comic-Con who did a good job following basic health and masking rules— I was encouraged by the general sense of consideration!

I’m still testing negative as of this morning— if you attended, I urge you to continue testing daily until you hit that sweet 3-day mark.

The first copy of the expanded paperback edition of Save It For Later just arrived, and it looks great! These come with a new topical discussion between Derf Backderf and I, some process thumbnails, citations and a recommended reading list— it’ll be available everywhere on August 8th from Abrams ComicArts. I’ll be signing copies at the paperback debut for San Diego Comic Con, July 22-24th!

I’m thrilled to announce that both Save It For Later (my solo graphic essay) and Run (written by Andrew Aydin & John Lewis, most art by L. Fury, first chapter/spot illustrations/sound effects by me, lettering by Chris Ross and me)have been nominated for Eisner Awards this year— in the same category, Best Graphic Memoir! MARCH: BOOK TWO wins an Eisner Award!

We're all thrilled and honored for March: Book Two to've won the 2016 Eisner Award for Best Reality-Based Work! It was a deeply moving awards ceremony all around. Frankly, I don't see why people poo-poo the Eisner ceremony-- I always love being immersed in such a supportive community of folks, celebrating the hard work of their peers driven by ideas and the need to make something enduring. Go comics.

March: Book Three debuted at San Diego Comic Con as well, closing out the trilogy. We had a fantastic panel Saturday morning, a massive children's march across the length of the convention center, and some packed signings all weekend. Thanks to everyone who came out, endured lines, and got a chance to say hey to The Man Himself, the great John Lewis.

March: Book Three will be available everywhere on August 2nd-- we'll be discussing the book that evening on The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC, and will have a big signing at the Tribeca Barnes & Noble in Manhattan on August 3rd at 6:00 pm.
